Strong Finish for 7S Runners

On Wednesday afternoon, the Seven Summits Centre for Learning running team entertained schools from around the West Kootenay region at Blackjack Cross-Country Ski Club, in the last meet of the season. It was a beautiful Rossland fall day, and spirits were high. Students represented schools from New Denver, Trail, Nelson, Slocan, Winlaw, and Rossland, and there were international athletes from Japan, Sweden, and Germany.

With more than 9 cross-country team members, Seven Summits fielded one of the largest cross-country teams, despite being the smallest educational facility. Seven Summits Learners, sporting their brand new cross-country singlets, put their home advantage to good use with a strong showing in all age groups.

Junior 7S female, Jasmine Drolet capped a brilliant year, finishing first in her category, and ahead of the senior females again. Senior female Sage Robine finished close behind, placing first in the senior girls’ category, with Michaela Mclean holding off international Red Mountain Nordic Academy ski racer Chiaki Yamamoto by a few seconds to take 3rd position. Yasmin Evans showed a lot of promise, finishing just a few minutes behind the seniors in the junior girls’ category.

Sam Finke put in a stellar effort, finishing 7th in an extremely competitive junior male field. International Red Mountain Alpine Ski Academy racers, Clemens Unterguggenburger from Munich, Germany and Hugo Dalmalm from Stockholm, Sweden continued their fierce rivalry in the senior boys’ category, Dalmalm holding on to claim 7th spot by just .2 of a second. Let’s hope their battling produces results in the upcoming ski season.
